SOME HISTORCIAL NEWS REGARDING DOWELL HOUSE.
Dowell House is named in recognition of Lieutenant George Dare Dowell VC. Lieutenant Dowell was sited for the Victoria Cross by rear Admiral Richard Dundis for his services in the Crimean War in July 1848. Lieutenant Dowell was presented with the VC by her Majesty Queen Victoria in June 1857.

George Dowell VC returned to Portsmouth and married an Alverstoke girl. Their eldest son followed him into the services and became a Colonel in the Royal Artillery. George Dowell left the service in 1866 and retired to New Zealand where he passed away in 1910.
