Location
Dingwall, reputed to be the birthplace of Macbeth in 1010, traces its origins as a settlement to the early ninth Century. Thanks to its sheltered location on the Cromarty Firth on Scotland's north-east coast it became an important strategic trading and administrative centre for Norse invaders. It was made a Royal Burgh in 1226 and later continued as the county town of Ross-shire. In more recent times Dingwall has become an important tourist destination with easy access by rail and road to outstanding local scenery as well as Scotland's northern highlands and the north-west coast. Dingwall has both a secondary and primary school, offering both Gaelic and English-medium education, as well as being served by medical, dental and legal practices. The town centre has a wide range of shops and banks, and there is also a Tesco superstore conveniently located.There are a host of outdoor activities available nearby including hillwalking, mountain biking, horse riding and a great variety of fishing, shooting and access to numerous golf courses within a 20 mile radius. Dingwall is also home to Ross County Football Club, who play top flight football in the Scottish Premier League.Dingwall offers good public transport services, with regular rail and bus services to the Highland capital of Inverness which is situated approximately 15 miles away. Inverness Airport provides a variety of domestic and European flights.
