Description

"Handsome detached Grade II listed Tudor house, set in mature gardens in the centre of this historic village.

Description

Understood to date from the early 16th century with later additions, Jarvis is a handsome detached home, listed Grade II and offered to the market for the first time in 65 years. This attractive timber framed house is typical of the vernacular Tudor style, with elevations of brick and plaster infilling, leaded light windows and a Horsham stone roof, and it is ideally located set in gardens of about an acre behind a knapped flint wall and wrought iron gates, in a tucked away yet central location within easy reach of Steyning s historic High Street.

Internally, period features of note include a wealth of exposed timbers and original joinery, open fireplaces, some oak and brick flooring and decorative plasterwork ceilings; despite its age the house extends to an impressive 3,175 square feet and offers well proportioned room sizes, particularly on the ground floor, together with the potential to create a self contained annexe in the newer wing of the property subject to the necessary consents .

Jarvis is approached via an oak front door opening to a part glazed entrance porch; an original, studded Tudor door in turn opens to the spacious reception hall. There are two formal reception rooms lying either side of the hall the drawing room is an elegant room overlooking the gardens to four aspects, featuring a polished stone fireplace and two classical style columns; the dining room has a full height bay window overlooking the garden and a handsome panelled recess housing a brick open fireplace.

The farmhouse style kitchen and breakfast room is fitted with a range of units with granite style worktops and a gas fired Alpha range cooker; there is a walk in pantry and ample space for a central breakfast table.

Beyond the kitchen is a rear hall and a cloakroom with WC, in turn opening to the large games room, a newer addition to Jarvis and built in keeping with the original house, with exposed ceiling timbers and a herringbone oak floor. A vaulted sun porch, utility room and a wet room lie beyond the games room and complete the ground floor accommodation.

There are four bedrooms on the first floor, lying off a long, part galleried landing, together with plenty of built in and fitted storage. Bedroom one has a walk in wardrobe and an en suite bathroom; bedroom two also has an en suite bathroom. Bedrooms three and four are served by a shower room and a separate WC.

Outside
Jarvis is approached via wrought iron gates, which open to a block paved parking area ahead of the house and single garage. The front of the house is well screened from the lane by a high flint wall and planting; there is a small area of lawn, with a flagstone pathway leading to the front door.

Jarvis s gardens and grounds are of particular note, leading away from the house to the south and west and extending to just over one acre in all. Immediately to the west of the house is an area of formal lawn, edged by a flint wall and flower and shrub borders; steps descend to a further area of lawn which slopes gently down away from the house, bordered by a band of mature trees.

A pathway leads across the lawn to the south west, through a lightly wooded section of the grounds, allowing access to pair of garages, one of which was originally an air raid shelter, accessed off Wykeham Close.

In all, about 1.1 acres.
